Vaughan Ludlam celebrates 20 years at Oyster
5 April 2023 / 3 min readWe recently had the pleasure of interviewing Vaughan Ludlam, Head of Leasing / Licensee, on his 20-year work anniversary at Oyster. Vaughan has been an integral part of the Oyster team for over two decades, and we are excited to celebrate his achievements. Here’s what Vaughan had to say about his time at Oyster.
What has been your proudest accomplishment(s) or achievement(s) during your time at Oyster?
The first is opening two new shopping centres, which I had almost fully leased before their openings, as well as two expansions of existing centres between late 2005 and mid-2006. In the lead-up to the opening of the shopping centres, I had an annual deal tally of 98 (I wish I’d kept count of the deals at the time so I could push it to 100), which remains my record.
The second is my involvement in bringing Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein to the New Zealand market; a great example of the ongoing evolution of the tenant mix at Dress Smart.
Lastly, I have enjoyed mentoring some exceptional property professionals who have become an integral part of Oyster’s growth. This has been a rewarding experience, and I am proud to have played a role in shaping the careers of those I have worked with.
Can you share a story or a moment that was particularly memorable during your time here?
Socialising with the Oyster team has given me some of my most memorable moments. Among them, I really enjoyed the team workshop we had at the stunning Castle Hill Station, where we participated in some epic activities alongside a great crew. Another highlight would be winning best costume at a couple of Oyster Christmas events; I won best costume for Jamie Lannister (Game of Thrones) and Princess Jasmine (Arabian Nights).
Can you share the top three things that you have learned throughout your career?
- Tenacity pays off.
- Relationships are key. The success to establishing good relationships is to nurture them through active listening and strive to keep dealings mutually beneficial – win/win!
- Time flies when you’re doing something you love and are surrounded by great people – it’s hard to believe two decades have already passed.
How has Oyster evolved over the last 20 years?
As a growth company, it has evolved a lot, which is one of the best things about Oyster. Oyster has diversified and scaled up its assets and capital sourcing. Oyster has added systems and policies, increased governance, moved and expanded locations, and raised attention to health and safety, sustainability, and the environment.
Despite all these changes, Oyster has remained true to its values that align with my own values and the company’s vision of Transforming Property Investment Together. I identify well with this vision and still take great satisfaction in contributing to it through the leasing of deals done by the team.
The growth of Oyster has also led to a significant transformation of Oyster’s personnel, generating numerous job roles and advancement opportunities. I feel fortunate to work with and have worked with many remarkable property professionals during my tenure at Oyster.
What advice would you give your younger self, just starting out in the industry?
Don’t underestimate the power of networking and the advantages of expanding your network beyond what may appear ‘necessary’ in the present moment.
Vaughan, we are grateful for the valuable contributions you’ve made to the Oyster team. Your hard work and dedication to your role have led to remarkable achievements and unforgettable moments. We wish you all the best for the next 20 years and beyond!
